Signature levels under the eIDAS regulation
The eIDAS (electronic Identification, Authentication and trust Services) regulation is a European Union regulation that aims to establish a strict legal framework for digital services within the EU. The European eIDAS regulation defines several levels of signature classified according to the level of security.

Simple signature
The simple signature is the basic signature level offering minimal security. It is based on data generated by the signatory, such as a password or a scanned signature. It can be used in contexts where security is not a major concern, such as electronic forms, internal company agreements or acceptance of the terms of an online contract. However, it has no legal value.
Advanced signature
The advanced signature offers an intermediate level of security, based on a qualified certificate that guarantees the authenticity of the signature. It offers greater security and reliability than the simple signature. The signatory can be verified in one of three ways: face-to-face with a qualified agent, via a certified identity verification service, or via a pre-established electronic presentation following a face-to-face meeting.
Qualified signature
The qualified signature is the highest level of signature that ensures the reliability of the signatory. It requires the use of a qualified certificate issued by an accredited trust service provider. It meets strict technical and legal requirements, and enjoys a legal presumption of validity and authenticity throughout the European Union. It is considered equivalent to a handwritten signature, and guarantees the integrity and confidentiality of signed documents.
